The children at this school speak different languages - Gujarati, Urdu, Bengali, English, Arabic and some others. Children are encouraged to speak their home language at school.

Children listen to stories in groups. We help children to develop skills in English through a structured programme of assesment, teaching and activities. We have bilingual support staff to help children to learn to speak English. We help all children to develop a basic vocabulary and social phrases in English.

We assess all children's language development during their first half term in school, using our special language assessment . This tells us what stage they are at in learning to speak and understand English.

We put the children into groups for language and story work at circle time to make sure that every child will learn in the best way.

The teachers who work with the children at circle time also work with these children for assessments and activities. They get to know each child really well and work on activities that are best for each child at the time.

Mr Shone will put out baskets of library books at the beginning of each session.

There is a basket for each group with a set of books at the right level for the children in that group. Please help your child to choose a book—you can change the book as often as you wish

  • look at the book with your child
  • talk about the pictures
  • talk about and read the story if you can in English or your home language
  • show your child how to look after the book- how to turn the pages carefully

PLEASE DON’T LET YOUR CHILD TEAR OR DRAW IN THE BOOK. KEEP THE BOOK IN THE PLASTIC BAG
