We have 120 children having free nursery education sessions– 60 in the morning and 60 in the afternoon.

We have some children who stay all day from 9-4 because of special family circumstances.

We have children who pay for daycare between 8am and 6pm.

We also have 8 resourced places for children with learning or communication difficulties.

The children come from a variety of cultural backgrounds– Indian, Pakistani, Somali, Turkish, Bangladeshi, Nigerian. Czech, Russian, Portugese

There are children from a range of religious backgrounds

There are many languages spoken in school- Gujarati , Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Somali, Czech, French, Arabic, Turkish…. oh and English !

Every child is unique and treated as a special individual

The Staff . . .

We have three teachers - the head teacher, deputy and part time teacher.

There are 3 full time and 1 part time Early Years Educators (EYE) with NNEB qualification and other support staff

There is also a senior early years educator and special needs assistant who work with the children who have extra needs in the resourced provision

There are 4 daycare staff within the school who work all year round .

We have 2 admin assistants, a caretaker and a dinner lady

The full time teachers and EYE each have a group of children they work with. The part time assistant supports children’s language development using bilingual skills

The support staff do baking and cooking activities with the children

There is no afternoon session on Fridays– the staff use this time to discuss children’s progress, talk about observational assessment and plan for the following week based on the children’s interests.

The Curriculum . . .

Our curriculum has been developed using ideas from several philosophies

High/scope– children are independent active learners. We provide a range of interesting resources in a stimulating environment and the children choose how to use these resources reflecting their interests.
There is a balance of child initiated and adult structured activities.

Regio Emilia– children are given time and space to pursue activities which interest them. Adults support, observe and document their learning

Experiential education– children are encouraged to be creative and imaginative. We focus on their well being, social skills and deep involvement in activities. Only if children are really involved can they achieve deep level learning.

We focus on developing communication skills through interactive circle time sessions using a wide range of props and stories

We assess children's learning through developmental domains, using observation and discussion– these assessments are used to identify developmental levels and early leaning goals in line with the QCA Early Years Foundation Stage

Our four main areas for development are—communication, creativity and imagination, physical development and social competence

All children have an assessment profile which reflects their development as a learner– this is shared regularly with parents

We have high expectations of all children—we want them all to do the best they can and become confident independent learners

Daycare Provision . . .

We offer daycare for 3 and 4 year olds within the school and also have an under threes centre in Alexandra Children’s Centre a few streets away.

There are 19 staff working in the under threes centre. We area registered for 65 places across the two sites.

We also provide holiday play sessions for 5-9 year olds, and crèche sessions whilst parents take classes in the centre .

Daycare is open 8am-6pm for 51 weeks

The parents pay for this provision as in any other private nursery.

This part of our service is self financing

Challenges and opportunities . . .

We have many links with support agencies who work with families of children with disabilities or in social need.

We try hard to involve parents as much as possible and organise workshops and parent days.

We offer special activities throughout the year

A visit to a farm in the summer

We have wonderful gardens on both sites offering exciting and challenging experiences for children

There are parties to celebrate all major cultural festivals

An African musician works with children in school

Artists come in to demonstrate and work with children

The creepy crawly show comes every summer

Some children go to the pantomime at Christmas
